Brother Cane

The Birmingham, Alabama-based rock quartet BROTHER CANE was formed in 1990 by singer/guitarist Damon Johnson and bassist Glen Maxey; originally called Chyld. They signed a development deal with Virgin Records through A&R man Aaron Jacoves. After working with different vocalists, Johnson was encouraged to front the band himself. Roman Glick was soon added on rhythm guitar, and Scott Collier joined as drummer the following year. Changing their name to Brother Cane, a debut album was released in 1993, with the first single "Got No Shame" becoming a major hit at AOR radio, featured a blistering harmonica intro by Topper Price ( great blues harmonica virtuoso and singer from Alabama, who died on May 16 2007 at age 54, a victim of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle he enthusiastically led for nearly 40 years).
Virgin, the band's record company, sent the group out to tour, they hoped to boost the band's recognition and sales. The band opened for such legends as Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter. They landed the starting spot for the Lynyrd Skynyrd/Bad Company tour, traveled with Robert Plant, and then landed their biggest gig, opening for Aerosmith during that band's 1994 tour. Ted Nugent, the Allman Brothers, and Van Halen also enjoyed the opening talents of Brother Cane. The band played over 300 shows, but it paid off; three singles from their first album hit the Album Rock charts ? ?Got No Shame? reached No. 2, ?That Don't Satisfy Me climbed? to No.6, and ?Hard Act to Follow? made it to No. 12. The Album ?Brother Cane? (which has sold over 250,000 copies in the U.S.) includes a timeless music which is harder and tougher than typically Southern-tunes. In the interview Damon Johnson listed Albums which had the greatest influence on music of Brother Cane: ?Live and Dangerous? ? Thin Lizzy; ?Rocks?- Aerosmith; ?Second Helping?-Lynyrd Skynyrd; ?Idlewild South?-ABB. But you can hear on this CD influences of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Guns&Roses too.

Afterwards came a series of amicable line-up shuffles. Maxey left the group, his bass position taken by original guitarist Roman Glick. David Anderson, a fellow Alabama native, became the band's lead guitarist. Their second album, Seeds (1995), was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, by Brother Cane with co-writer Marti Frederiksen (who had also contributed in this capacity to their debut). It was mixed in Los Angeles by Pearl Jam/Sponge collaborator Tim Palmer. Their song of this Album "And Fools Shine On" mount an 8-week stay at #1 at Rock Radio in the U.S. and Canada. ?Fools? also became the theme song for the horror film, ?Halloween 6?, and secured the band tour dates in Europe and as opening act for rock legends Van Halen and Joe Satriani ( in Germany). Damon became fast friends with singer Sammy Hagar, and made songwriting and guitar-playing contributions to Sammy's first post-Van Halen solo album, ?Marching To Mars?.
